Miss World : Controversies Surrounding The Pageant

In 1973, Marjorie Wallace, the first American to win the title was forced to relinquish the title 104 days into her reign. Pageant officials stated that Ms. Wallace "had failed to fulfill the basic requirements of the job." The title which would have been offered to the 1st runner-up was turned down by Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines.

Miss World 1974
The 1974 winner Helen Morgan representing the United Kingdom was forced to resign four days later after it was discovered she was a single mother.

GABRIELLA BRUM (GERMANY)
Miss World 1980

The 1980 winner Gabriella Brum of Germany resigned one day after winning, initially claiming her boyfriend disapproved. A few days later it emerged that she had been forced to resign after it was discovered that she posed naked for a magazine.
LINOR ABARGIL (ISRAEL)
Miss World 1998
Just days after her 1998 crowning, Israel's Linor Abargil revealed that she had been raped only two months before the pageant. One of the highlights of her year was seeing her accused rapist convicted.

Miss Universe History : Dethroned Miss Universe Title

In the history of Miss Universe, there are 3 titleholders that were dethroned/resigned due to the following reasons mentioned below:

MISS UNIVERSE 1952
Armi Kuusela, Finland
(Resigned)
Armi Kuusela of Finland, who became the first Miss Universe in 1952, gave up her crown shortly before her one year reign as the Miss Universe ended. The beauty from Finland did so as she wished to get married to a Filipino tycoon, Virgilio Hilario.Although she became the first international beauty queen to voluntarily relinquish her crown, she was allowed to retain her title by pageant organizers. No formal replacement have been made.

MISS UNIVERSE 1974
Amparo Munoz, Spain
(Dethroned)
After winning the Miss Universe crown in 1974 Amparo Muñoz of Spain, relinquishes her title six months into her reign. The first runner-up Miss Wales Helen Morgan became ineligible to succeed her because by then Ms. Morgan had won the Miss World 1974 pageant (where she represented the United Kingdom). By a twist of fate, Ms. Morgan ends up relinquishing the Miss World title several days into her reign when it was revealed she was an unmarried mother. With the resignation of Amparo Munoz and with Helen Morgan deemed ineligible to succeed her, it was unclear why the title was not offered to the 2nd runner-up (also Miss Photogenic), Miss Finland Johanna Raunio, a crowd-favorite at the pageant. Amparo Munoz, the first Miss Universe crown for Spain is dethroned for her violent temper and behavior. No replacement is made.

MISS UNIVERSE 2002
Oxana Federova, Russia
(Dethroned)
Oxana Fedorova, the first Russian to hold the title, was ousted for allegedly failing to meet her contractual obligations. The mysterious change sparked widespread speculation about sex, marriage, money, pregnancy, superpower politics and any number of other things. Fedorova was crowned in Puerto Rico in mid-May, and was replaced by Justine Pasek the first Panamanian to hold the title in late September.

Lisl Goldarbeiter, Miss Universe 1929 (Austria)

Lisl Goldarbeiter wearing the official crown “The International Pageant of Pulchritude”, where the winner was named "Miss Universe"

The Miss Universe Pageant began officially in 1952, in Long beach California, USA since then, it has been celebrated consecutively. The winners got world wide fame and great contracts with sponsors of the pageant. Although Miss Universe comes from the inspiration of other beauty pageant held in the decade of 1920 in Galveston, Texas, USA named “The International Pageant of Pulchritude”, where women representing each State of USA and women representing their country competed together for the title for first time in 1926.

The first winner was Catherine Moylan of Dallas, Texas, but it was in 1929 when the winner was named “Miss Universe” due many countries taking part.

Austria's Lisl Goldarbeiter is the first woman named Miss Universe

In 1929 was the first time an International contestant won the Pageant, she was Austria’s Lisl Goldarbeiter, the day after her photo was in all newspaper called her "Miss Universe".

Lisl born on March, 23 1909, she grew up in Vienna in modest circumstances, first won the title of Miss Austria in 1929 at the Austrian beauty contest, finishing ahead of 600 other contestants.

She finished second at the Miss Europe beauty contest in Paris, where the first Hungarian beauty queen, Böske Simon won.

That year the beauty queens of the world set sail to the United States to compete against the American beauties in Texas.

This is where Lisl was voted the first Miss Universe by a unanimous decision of the jury. She received $2,000 in gold and a large silver plaque. She now suddenly world famous, received various invitations and an offer from Hollywood, Miss Lisl Goldarbeiter "Universe" blushed when offered a $15,000 theatrical contract which entailed appearing in a tight bathing suit four times daily, "Papa must decide," she said, as well many artists and celebrities wanting to spend some time with her.

She traveled extensively and, having rejected numerous suitors, finally married Fritz Spielmann, heir to a silk necktie fortune in Vienna.

These golden years in Vienna came to an end when Hitler's Germany annexed Austria. They lost nearly everything in the war, the adventure of life carried-on and Lisl finally found a home in Budapest in 1950, she died on December 14, 1997.

Marci Tenczer, her cousin faithfully recorded it all on film and in 2006 a documentary was made with his material.

She was crowned in Galveston Texas as "Miss Universe 1929"

Miss Universe and Miss World Crown: Look A Like

OLD MISS UNIVERSE CROWN (1963-2001)

MIKIMOTO CROWN (2002-2007)

The long standing symbol of pageantry, such as Miss USA and Miss Universe, has always been the ornate and opulent crown. In fact, the crown is so central to the titles that often the women who is chosen as the winner of one of the pageants is commonly said, especially by the media, to have "won the crown," rather than to have "won the title". The elusive crown is the one constant in the Miss Universe Organization - a partnership with Donald J. Trump and National Broadcasting Company, Inc. As the titleholders change every year and continue on to other pursuits, the crown stays with the Organization, waiting patiently for the next titleholder to proudly wear it.

In 2002, master pearl designer Mikimoto became the official jewelry sponsor of the Miss Universe Organization, creating all three crowns and tiaras since then, which includes the crown for Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe. The radiant and lustrous Miss Universe crown, shown here, features one 18mm size pearl, the most rare and largest pearl created by any oyster. The crown also has 500 diamonds, totaling almost 30 carats and 120 Akoya and South Sea pearls and is valued at $250,000. The design takes inspiration from the phoenix, the gorgeous and majestic bird with breathtaking gold and red plumage. In mythology, the phoenix has been associated with immortality and rebirth because of stories that it regenerates when wounded by a foe and that at some point the bird will ignite its nest and both nest and bird will burn fiercely and be reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. Following that association, Mikimoto used the plumes of the rising phoenix to symbolize eternal beauty, status and power. The crown was designed and created on Mikimoto Pearl Island in Japan. The length of the Mikimoto sponsorship is unknown, however, based on its sophisticated elegance and the grace it bestows on the titleholder the breathtaking beauty of the crown has already become memorable.
